New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying these medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
